Law firm Gordons elects Leeds-based Physcap its new chosen charity

Yorkshire law firm Gordons has named a Leeds-based organisation whose patrons include legendary TV chat show host Sir Michael Parkinson as its chosen charity.
PhysCap, buyer of specialised and therapeutic equipment for children with severe physical disabilities, was the clear choice of Gordons’ partners and staff, who will now raise money for it during the next year.
The charity styles itself as providing “big help for little people”, who are frequently referred to it by sources such as therapists, hospitals and specialist schools. The charity is often the last resort for families whose efforts to obtain funding elsewhere have been rebuffed.
Other PhysCap patrons include leading football referee Howard Webb, Coronation Street actor Jack P Shepherd and former Apprentice star Claire Young.
Daniel Gray, chairman, PhysCap, said: “We depend on the generosity of businesses and individuals to ensure we can continue to assist children who need our help, so we’re delighted Gordons has made us its chosen charity for the coming year.”
Established in 1972, PhysCap has supported children with a wide range of conditions and syndromes, including cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. It has provided equipment including touch screen computers, electric buggies, wheelchairs, specially adapted trikes, standing frames and smart boards.
PhysCap has bought equipment including an electronic “touch talker” enabling a teenager to speak to his family for the first time. It also funded the design of a “twinkle eye” switch, which allowed a girl, paralysed except for being able to move her eyelids, to activate a computer. In addition, the organisation has contributed to the adaption of an entire home.
John Holden, senior partner, Gordons, said: “PhysCap provides wonderful assistance to severely disabled children. The highest proportion of our staff wanted to raise money for the charity, so we’re looking forward to helping it support these richly deserving youngsters over the next 12 months.”
