My first three months as an apprentice by Jacob Eaton
Thursday 11th January 2024
Since starting my apprenticeship three months ago, I can honestly say that it has been an amazing experience; packed full of learning, growth, and exciting opportunities.
As soon as I left college after completing my A-levels, I knew I wanted to immerse myself in the practical side of the legal profession, rather than solely study and theorise about it, and I was pleased to discover the apprenticeship programme after coming across a post on social media.
After applying to two other firms, Gordons was the one that immediately stood out for me. As soon as I entered the office, there was a great energy and a genuine commitment to nurturing young talent.
My apprenticeship has offered me with the unique ability to gain practical experience and theoretical knowledge simultaneously, providing me with the opportunity to grow professionally while contributing meaningfully to the firm. Even though my role has required extensive intellectual tenacity, it has been balanced by the inclusive and supportive culture I am surrounded by every day, and it’s clear that Gordons goes beyond the traditional notion of a workplace —rather, it is a community that perfectly embodies my values and career goals.
From the moment I started at Gordons, I’ve felt like I’ve become a valued member of the team. Everyone I have met so far has been incredibly friendly and welcoming, and there’s a real emphasis on creating a positive atmosphere both in and out of the office. We’ve had some fantastic experiences together, from nights out to shared meals, and we even had an impromptu trip to the opera one evening. It’s been so much more than just a job; it’s been about forging genuine connections and building lasting relationships.
I have also recently joined the Sustainability Committee, which I am particularly looking forward to. We are currently in the process of planning different initiatives to improve our commitments to environmental impact, one of which includes arranging a group litter-picking event. Our efforts are not limited to our workplace alone, but also extend to the wider Leeds community. It’s great to be part of this initiative and contribute to the realisation of a more environmentally conscious and sustainable future.
However, one of my proudest little achievements has been joining the Gordons Band (as their bass player), which has added a very unexpected addition to my apprenticeship. It has not only broadened my skill set but has also introduced me to a network of individuals who share a passion for music, and we all have a great time jamming together in the studio.
After only three months, my conviction that Gordons is the best place for me to advance my legal career has been strengthened by my active participation in a wide range of events and projects. The firm’s distinctive approach, characterised by a sleeves-rolled-up attitude, resonates with my vision for a rewarding and impactful trajectory in the field of law.
